Contend earnestly to love like Christ
And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.’ – Galatians 6:9
Nehemiah served wine to king Artaxerxes in Susan. The people of Israel were deported by the enemy to Babel, and lived there in captivity. When he heard that the people who were still in Jerusalem, were in great misery, and that the walls and gates of Jerusalem were destroyed, his heart was filled with compassion for the people and the city. He cried out to God and received permission from the king to go back to Jerusalem to rebuild the city.
Anyone who wants to fulfill God’s plan for his/her life, will experience resistance. The enemies of Israel were not pleased that there was someone who looked after Jerusalem and its citizens. They used several tactics to stop the reconstruction of the wall. But Nehemiah had a vision and knew his task. He had compassion for the need of his people. He had faith, love and perseverance. He continued till he accomplished the work that God had given him. During this difficult time, he had rest and peace in his heart. He knew: our God will fight for us!
We should be like Nehemiah. God needs people in His service who love, encourage and inspire others. People who work hard and pray a lot. People who don’t give up during opposition. Men and women who fear God more than people. Men and women who not only see the need, but also do something about it. Let us – just like Nehemiah – commit ourselves fully to do the work of God. Let us love the people like Christ. Then we will reap blessings at the right time.
Father, help me to serve and love others. May I be quick to forgive and slow to get angry. Let my mouth be an instrument used to bless and not curse others. Guard my heart against the offenses that the enemy would like to use to employ me to tear down others. Use me to build people up! Let my words impart grace to those who hear and let no corrupt word come out of my mouth. Let my words bless Your name and be a testimony to the person I am in Christ. Jesus, bring me opportunity to help others. Give me a new dream and a new desire to want to do good and live a life that is well pleasing to You. Use my life as a testimony of Your goodness that will encourage many. May I lead people to the cross where our sins are forgiven and wrongs washed away by Your blood. Fill my heart with worship and with praise, that I will bless the Lord at all times. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
