2020’s pandemic did interrupt all of our schedules! This was also the case for Hillsong. One of the biggest events of this ministry is their yearly conference. This recurring event is the moment where Hillsong Worship presents their newest releases and also records new music. One of their biggest collabs for 2020 should have been the attendance of GRAMMY-winning Gospel singer Tasha Cobbs and even though the conference couldn’t continue in its original form, the collaboration with this Gospel powerhouse DID happen.
The song ‘Awake my Soul’ is originally from the 2019 Hillsong Worship album ‘Awake’. The original song was written and led by lead vocalist Brooke Ligertwood. The message of the album and particularly this song was directed towards an awakening of God’s people. The song ‘Awake my Soul’ functions as a song-cry of praise and self-reflection to listen to God’s voice. The upcoming Hillsong Conference in July 2020 would traditionally be the date to record the music videos and live recordings for the songs on their new album.
“Last year our church, Hillsong, announced that Tasha Cobbs Leonard was going to be one of our guests at Hillsong Conference 2020. Tasha and I then began talking about what it would be like for us to record a song together live at Hillsong Conference,” said Ligertwood.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic evolved in such a way that the Hillsong conference 2020 couldn’t continue in its current form. “It became clear we weren’t going to be able to execute what we’d originally planned. However, the collaboration felt important, so perhaps there was something else we could do…And so, ‘Awake My Soul with Tasha Cobbs Leonard’ was birthed.” Listen to Hillsong and Tasha Cobbs’ ‘Awake My Soul’ on Maasbach Radio, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube.
